This article interested me because of its link to spirits and their influence upon cultures. To put this into a story I'd make the influence of the scarring link those with the spirits of their culture a lot more obviously, with the scarring meaning that the men have had a spirit guide assigned to them, and in the form of a crocodile. I read in the article that this culture was threatened by missionaries trying to change those in the area to Christians, so the story could be set in the past, when Christians were first travelling to the river communities of Papua New Guinea. Those who have been cut so their skin resembles a crocodile's have a duty to protect their community from those who are trying to be rid of it.
